July 8 – The Grim Reaper Fitness Kids Team traveled from Bloomington early Saturday morning to compete in the Lakeside Triathlon at the Commodore Decatur Yacht Club on Lake Decatur.

Coach Wendy Smith said their kids, aged 6 to 14, competed at last year’s final Rodney T. Miller Triathlon and were looking forward to this year’s event. Triathlon organizer Gene Mueller was thrilled with the weather and said with a huge smile, “This is my favorite weekend of the year!”

28 boys and girls competed in this year’s Triathlon/Duathlon which featured competitors in the 9-14 year old range, and 5-8 year olds who competed in a slightly shorter Duathlon. Volunteer Coordinator Kim Mangan said they had approximately 100 volunteers on hand to help facilitate this year’s race.

The top 3 finishers and their times in each race are as follows:

New name, same goals for Lakeside Triathlon

New name, same goals for Lakeside Triathlon

DECATUR – A new name doesn't mean there are any different goals for the Lakeside Triathlon.

After a successful 10-year run as the Rodney T. Miller triathlon, named after the Illinois State Police officer who died in the line of duty in 2006, the race still carries the same ambitions – but will have a new look.

April 16 – Registration is underway for the Decatur Lakeside Triathlon, formerly the Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon.

The Tri will be held July 8th and 9th in Nelson Park on Lake Decatur. The kids races will be held Saturday, adults Sunday.

Aside from the name change, there are other changes to this year’s Triathlon as well.

There will be no intermediate course. All adults will race in a short-course event consisting of a 600 yard swim, a 15 mile bike ride and a 3.2 mile run.

The Duathlon is still a part of the event and consists of a 1.4 opening run followed by a 15 mile bike ride and a 3.2 mile run.

New this year is the addition of an Aquabike option that is a 600 yard swim and a 15 mile bike ride.
